Need to import video on the computer. The camera probably came with a firewire cable and software that can do this quite easily. Otherwise you can easily FireWire cables at any electronics store and you can use Windows Movie Maker that comes free with Windows, if you’re on a PC. Connect the FireWire cable between the camera and the PC and turn the camera. Open the software and try (probably imported under the File menu). If you do not have firewire on your PC, things are a bit “complicated. But I will not go into these details, unless you need it.
Take a look at hdvsplit for video capture, or you can look at the recommendations of the second link. HDV is already digital, but you can edit and output into the format you prefer using an editor like Sony Vegas Movie Studio. Some HDV camcorders can convert to DV-AVI, but you would need to consult the manual for details.
